Why adjectives underperform

Words like seamless, innovative and best-in-class are easy to write and difficult to trust. They ask the evaluator to do the work of interpretation, while giving them no safe reason to award the mark.

This does not mean your writing needs to be flat. It means energy should come from the work itself, not from a layer of promotional language placed over it.

The evidence ladder

Start with the result. Add the mechanism that produced it. Then add the conditions: where, when, at what scale and for whom. This ladder turns an assertion into a useful piece of proof.

  • Result: what changed?
  • Mechanism: how did you change it?
  • Context: why does this example matter here?
  • Transfer: how will you apply it to this contract?
Specificity is not less persuasive than enthusiasm. It is what gives enthusiasm somewhere to stand.
